President’s Message

Dear Esteemed Members of the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA), Industry Stakeholders, and Valued Partners, as we embark on a new chapter in our journey, I am honored to address you as the re-elected President of BPGMEA for the 2023-2024 term. This opportunity to serve our dynamic industry once again fills me with immense gratitude and a renewed commitment to our shared goals. The past year has been a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Bangladesh’s plastic sector. Our export earnings reached $201.09 million during the July-April period of FY2024, marking a significant growth of nearly 18%. This achievement underscores the competitive pricing and superior quality of our locally manufactured plastic products, which continue to gain traction in international markets. Looking ahead, our vision is both ambitious and attainable. We aim to capture 3% of the global plastic market by 2030, a target that reflects our sector’s potential and the dedication of our manufacturers. To realize this vision, we must focus on several strategic areas:

Sustainable Practices: As global attention shifts towards environmental responsibility, adopting a circular economy is imperative. By innovating and managing plastic use efficiently, we can reduce waste and promote recycling. Currently, Bangladesh recycles approximately 37% of mismanaged plastic, and with concerted efforts, we can enhance this further.
Infrastructure Development: Investing in waste management infrastructure is crucial. Proper disposal and recycling facilities will not only mitigate environmental concerns but also bolster our industry’s reputation globally.
Energy Solutions: Addressing the energy crisis is vital for uninterrupted industrial operations. We have proposed measures such as investing in new gas wells and exploring import agreements to ensure a stable energy supply for our sector.
Market Expansion: Exploring new markets and diversifying our product range will be key drivers of growth. Participation in international fairs and exhibitions will showcase our capabilities and open avenues for collaboration.
Capacity Building: Equipping our workforce with the necessary skills through training and development programs will enhance productivity and innovation within the industry.

Our collective efforts have positioned Bangladesh as a formidable player in the global plastic industry. The domestic market, valued at approximately $2.99 billion, is growing at an annual rate of 20%, reflecting robust demand and potential. In conclusion, I urge all members and stakeholders to unite in our pursuit of excellence. By embracing sustainable practices, investing in infrastructure, addressing energy challenges, expanding our markets, and building capacity, we can achieve our ambitious goals. Together, let us propel Bangladesh’s plastic industry to new heights, contributing significantly to our national economy and establishing a legacy of innovation and responsibility.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication.
Warm regards,

Shamim Ahmed
President
